2024/2025 Paintings
I explore how past ideas, aesthetics, and cultural moments “haunt” the present. My paintings revisit joyful colours from my childhood mediascape and energetic shapes from my teenage music taste. These energetic forms, once tied to subcultures like anime and metal core, now shift and transform, moving beyond their original meanings.
As I work on the canvas today, these shapes transformand repeat and blur the boundaries between past, present, and future, creating a sense of non-linear time. Through this process, I explore an out-of-time space where memory, speculation, and transformation coexist. Joyful for a childhood, yet angry at how bleak the future has become.
I work through constant revision—sketching, designing, refining, and rediscovering forms—while also allowing materials to have their own say in the conversation. Experimenting at a small scale, I layer paint, adjust viscosity, and test how opacity and transparency interact. I often build up soft layers slowly, then carve into them with bold and stark shapes.
What matters most is that the hand remains visible, the process itself left exposed. Under-layers emerge and interact, creating a work that is not just a reworking of elements across time but an archive of its own making—a record of transformation.
My paintings balance joy and disappointment with time travel and transformation.
